As with the rest of the website, I include references to theatre work because it, too, has been a crucial part of my busy creative life as a Hong Kong artist. There has been the occasional show in the last few years – for example South Pacific for the HK Singers three years ago – but the bulk of the theatre work goes back to my arrival in HK in 1965. In the next 30 years I tackled dozens of shows for all the different clubs, plus everything else from late night Review to Opera. In the end I had so many scale models that I was able to stage the first-ever exhibition in the City Hall of theatre design. It was during the running of this display, with its illuminated sets, that I discovered the existence of large City Hall rats who demonstrated their approval in the only way they knew how!

As the 80s wore on I became more involved as the paid professional guest designer for the HK Repertory Theatre, all of whose productions were in Cantonese. I remember with great affection the genial team who put the show on and their delightful tradition of not ‘breaking a leg’ but of eating a leg - of roast pig - before the opening night.

Part of the display board lists as many of the shows as I can now remember and I do apologise if I have left out any production or organisation. In scale they covered a military tattoo in an outdoor stadium through to a tiny but talented organisation called Theatre 51. It performed in a Nissen hut in Kowloon with an audience capacity of 40.

跟我以往的其他畫展一樣，我同樣在這次畫展中加入一些自己的舞台 設計作品。因為這些全都是我身為香港藝術家在繁忙的藝術創作生涯 中的一重要部份。過去幾年我雖然偶有作品出爐 – 例如為三年前的 香港歌手南太平洋演出所作的設計 – 但是大部份的舞台創作可追溯 到1965年我初步到港時的作品。在隨後的30年間，我為大大小小不同 類型的俱樂部設計了十多套舞台作品，種類由午夜匯演到歌劇演出不 等。最後由於作品數量之多，我居然能夠在大會堂召開舞台設計展。 也正是在這次展覽進行期間，在燈光的照亮下，我才發現大會堂大老 鼠這種存在物正以牠們才懂得的方式讚賞我的作品。

80年代漸漸地過去，我以職業客串設計家的身份和香港話劇團的關係 也越來越密切。留在我溫馨記憶中的是那班和藹可親，為演出辛苦張 羅的工作人員和他們那不忍弄斷一條腿，但卻可以不假思索地在前一 晚吃掉–條腿 – 燒豬腿 - 的可愛傳統。

展覽版上展出了我記憶所及的舞台劇，萬一有掛一漏萬，漏掉了任何 作品或機構的話，實感抱歉。這些演出按規模大小包括了在戶外運動 場舉行的軍事圖騰表演到人才輩出的小公司 Theatre 51 舉行的演出。 Theatre 51這間公司曾在九龍一處尼生式鐵皮屋為四十名觀眾表演。

隨着2007年的到來，我也無可避免地走到了75歲。我可以靜默一分鐘 以示慶祝，但我選擇以回顧過去在港的活動和展示一些實質的成果的 方式來慶祝。

跟許多創作人一樣，我偶有“欣喜若狂”的時刻，不過更多的是自我 懷疑和“煎熬痛苦”的時刻。但在我挑選作品、相片、回憶錄這些因 要出版畫冊不得不張羅這些細節的過程中，最使我大為驚訝的是，我 居然可以找到這麼多的時間去完成這一切的工作。

我曾全時間教書，對我來說這是一種可以用自己從別人身上獲得的鼓 勵和個人的熱忱 (而非所學的知識) 去感染別人的愉快經歷。在這過 程中，我盡量在能力所及的範圍內助妻子 Moyreen 一臂之力帶大三個 孩子。在我埋首於各種創作工作的歲月裏，幸得妻子和三個孩子， Katrina, Simon 和 Nicole 相隨左右，藉此我由衷地感激她們的溫馨陪伴 和支持。

對購買我作品的許多朋友和那些未曾相識的人，我也藉此表示感激。 在此我特別要向 Keith Kerr 和太古集團致以萬二分的謝意。我要感謝 他們對我厚愛有嘉和長期不斷的支持，使我能如願以償，舉辦了這樣 一次別開生面的畫展。我還得感謝許多作家批准我將過去不斷收集得 來的美譽翻印在這本畫冊上。像所有的畫家一樣，我需要各種能得到 的鼓勵!
